New large order for Purac - Expansion of wastewater treatment plants in Bergen, Norway
Environmental engineering company Purac in Lund will supply equipment for the expansion of two wastewater treatment plants in Bergen, Norway. The order is worth SEK 115 million.
- "It is a very large order for us," says Peter Thulin, Marketing Manager at Purac.
The customer is the Bergen municipality and the order includes building of a total of four of its plants, located inside caverns. Purac will be responsible for process design and all mechanical equipment to two of these, and also training of the operating staff. The contract also includes supervision when plants are in operation to ensure that the authorities' treatment requirements are achieved.
- "Purac is one of the leading companies in Water and Wastewater Treatment. We have the resources and skills to implement large projects such as this, that is why we got this order", says Peter Thulin.
Bergen is situated on the west coast of Norway and has looked beyond the Atlantic as a great and durable recipient of sewage. The municipality has for its purified water only used simple screens and grit chambers.
- "Atlantic is one giant ocean that cleans itself. That is why many Norwegian towns along the coast had a simple mechanical treatment. But the sewage is first let out in the fjords and bays, and can, if it is not sufficiently purified, affect fish and other marine life. This might eventually lead to a dead sea bottom", says Peter Thulin.
Norway has for some time tightening the requirements on emissions in the oceans. With the help of Purac Bergen is now implementing biological wastewater treatment. The formation process significantly produces more sludge than the current mechanical treatment. The plans are that the sludge shall be digested into biogas and then converted into district heating and fuel for city buses. This requires a biogas plant and a plant for the purification of biogas to vehicle fuel. These facilities will also be procured, which may mean more orders for Purac.
- "We are going to compete there as well and have good hopes of success. We have done a lot of projects in Norway during the years and we see Norway as part of our domestic market", says Peter Thulin.
The expansion of the sewage treatment works will be completed 2013.
Purac is included in the environmental group Läckeby Water in Kalmar where Purac has the producing parts of the equipment for treatment plants.
