Norwegian Environment Minister inaugurates Purac Biogas plant in Oslo
Oslo buses and garbage trucks will start using biogas as vehicle fuel. Norwegian Environment Minister Erik Solheim today inaugurates Oslo's first plant for the purification of biogas to vehicle fuel, delivered by the Swedish environmental engineering company Purac in Lund.
The new facility is centrally located in Oslo at Bekkelaget, the municipal sewage treatment plant, also built by Purac ten years ago.
Bekkelagets sewage treatment plant treats the wastewater from 300 000 inhabitants and produce biogas from dried mud. Until now, the gas has been used for internal heating. The new biogas plant will be purified from, inter alia, carbon dioxide and compressed to fuel buses and refuse trucks to run on.
The order value for Purac is SEK 30 million.
- This is our second order for a Norwegian plant for upgrading biogas to vehicle fuel. First we delivered to Stavanger. In Sweden, we were among the first to upgrade the biogas to vehicle fuel. It has given us a leading position in technology and experience, says Sven Almqvist, Division Director for Purac, which is part of environmental technology group Läckeby Water.
Ole Jacob Johansen, project manager for water and wastewater unit in Oslo municipality, says:
- Norway is entering a new era. The municipality has ambitious climate targets. As buses and refuse trucks phased in to run on biogas, carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced at the center. Purac has the best facility, both environmentally and economically and this is why we chose them as a supplier.
Purac's Norwegian subsidiary Bevas will operate the new facility. Bevas already has a 20-year contract for operation of treatment plants at Bekkelaget.
The last five years Purac has delivered some ten biogas plants for upgrading to Sweden, Norway and Germany.
